Chasing David Thompson

David Thompson's story has fascinated me since I was nine years old. North America's greatest geographer was first introduced to me through a children's novel entitled 'The Map Make', written by an Alberta author by the name of Kerry Wood. I remember being captivated with the stories of adventure, exploration, mapping and the manner in which all that inhabited western North America once lived.

Chasing David Thompson came as a result of rigorous research into the explorations and travels of Thompson. As a result of inquiries from those who served on the David Thompson Bicentennial Partnership, the research inherently became a paper to verify and measure the distances covered by Thompson between 1785 and 1812; the years spent while engaged in the fur trade with the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company.

It should be noted that since the writing and publishing of this paper in 2007, I have come across more information that may vary the measurement in terms of an increase of distance traveled. It is clear that we do not fully understand where Thompson traveled in some cases. My research continues and when completed the change in measurement will be updated.
