Chasing Peter Fidler
Since my early introduction to David Thompson, the exploration of western Canada suddenly became an interest to me. The next great Canadian surveyor that I became interested in was Peter Fidler, an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company, trained by Philip Turnor, and was a friend of David Thompson. My believe of course is not the main stream train of thought, however one which I believe is true because of the research by Mr. Sean Peake who has transcribed all of Thompson's journals and found evidence of this friendship.
Chasing Peter Fidler came as a result of rigorous research into the explorations and travels of Thompson. Like Thompson before, I have placed all of Fidler's travels within a contemporary GIS and am now calculating measured distances as I confirm each of the routes that Fidler traveled. The research inherently will verify his routes and measure the distances covered by Fidler between 1789 and 1822; the years spent while engaged in the fur trade with the Hudson's Bay Company. A number will be provided once the work is done and a map created to display the results much in the same manner as the maps created for Thompson.
