The Accuracy of David Thompson

Thompson Obs. [PAPER IS NOT COMPLETE]

Since the beginning of the bicentennials to commemorate David Thompson (1770-1857), one of the attributes assigned to him was his ability to observe\record\provide accurate observations within the context of a survey and to produce accurate maps. Much has been written concerning how accurate his mapping was as a result of his surveys and how his maps were used up until the late 19th to early 20th century.

From a surveying and mapping perspective however, the information, assumptions and innuendo that have surfaced since have become more and more diluted as the bicentennials have continued. This is of no surprise as there isn’t any solid information discussing the accuracy claim.

A statement that Thompson’s accuracy was exceptional, infers that some sort of comparison has taken place. However, as it stands, there is no documentation to shed light on what comparison has been done if any, what exactly is being compared and the conclusions of such a comparison.

This paper, when completed, will answer the important questions concerning accuracy and therefore provide a basis to the claim of accuracy by answering the questions surrounding the same.
