Moccasin Miles ~ The Travels of Charlotte Small 1799-1812
My knowledge of Charlotte Small came through my involvement with the David Thompson Bicentennials Partnership. Even then however, little was was know of David Thompson's wife. It had been surmised on many occasions that there was evidence to suggest that she traveled extensively with Thompson, but no one knew just how far. Mr. Sanford, former chair to the partnership, would then ask the question specifically to S. Leanne Playter, "Had Charlotte traveled as much as Lewis and Clarke?"; who were also being celebrated south of the border in the U.S.
It was through S. Leanne Playter's ground breaking research that this thematic map was created from. The map has been described as the most comprehensive visual description of Charlotte Small’s travels ever done and was utilized by Professor Jennifer SH Brown in her submission to recognize Charlotte Small as a person of historical significance by the Government of Canada. Efforts such as these further add credibility to the roles that woman played in the history of Canada.
